Not very loud

I bought these because I (mistakenly) thought they were "launched" before exploding, planning on use as "bird bombs" to disperse flocks of birds at the airport. It turned out, after testing, that they are just 12 gauge blanks, and not very loud at that. I fired one in a flare gun and it went off in the gun (nothing launched) and wasn't really that loud. I wasn't wearing ear protection (I expected the explosion to happen hundreds of feet in the air) and it was about as loud as a .22 round. They could serve as a warning sound in a perimeter alarm but I doubt it would deter a bear unless it was a foot or two from his face.
